Origin:

The origin of the Gewuerztraminer is not quite clear. It is assumed that the name comes from the South Tyrolean town of Tramin, where it is still grown today.

Requirements to the vineyard site:

Gewuerztraminer needs quite good vineyard sites to get the high suggar content which it needs to get a good quality.

Spread:

Alsace probably grows the largest area (2,500 ha), followed by California, Germany, Austria, Italy and Australia.

Specials:

According to the descriptive list of varieties of the Bundessortenamt (Federal Office of varieties) Traminer and Gewuerztraminer are one and the same variety. The official name is Red Traminer. However, it has established itself, that the more aromatic clones are called Gewuerztraminer and the somewhat more neutral clones are called Traminer.

Coulure (or shot berries) is sometimes a big problem with gewurztraminer, so it should not be planted in windy sites or on vigorous rootstocks.
