High-stem vines in the nursery

High-stem vines or high grafted vines are vines which have an explicitly longer rootstock (ca. 80 cm). The scion and with this the first shoot is therefore right after planting already in a level of about 0,7 m above ground. So it is a lot easier to protect them from herbicide treatment and from damage through wild animals.

Because of the more of wood at a high grafted vine, these have more reserves. So often this grow faster in the year of planting.

Another advantage is that the suckering of the shoots beyond the head of the vine is no longer necessary, because all the buds of the rootstock are already disbudded before grafting, so normally no shoots from the rootstock should grow.

A high-stem vine is much more difficult to produce, so they cost definetly more than the small ones - also grafted vines.

Some years ago, these high-stem vines have been mainly used for the replanting of died off plants. Nowadays, more and more viticulturists plant a whole new vineyard with these vines.
